HSE warns oil companies on North Sea to improve accident rates
North Sea oil and gas companies have been taken to task about their safety record after a sharp increase in accidents to workers and oil and gas leaks from offshore installations.

The HSE has bluntly told companies that their health and safety record covering 27,000 workers is "simply not good enough." Recent figures show that although there were no fatalities, the number of major injuries almost doubled in 2008-09.

New register for consultants to be in place by January 2011
The HSE intends to set up a registration scheme for safety consultants by January 2011.
The voluntary scheme will create a register of consultants accredited to give employers competent advice. The scheme was agreed at a meeting of the major health and safety bodies chaired by HSE chief executive Geoffrey Podger recently.
